The GMTA's membership is global. Members are national or regional medical technology industry associations. Together, they represent innovative companies that currently develop and manufacture 85 percent of the world’s medical devices, diagnostics and equipment.

a. organize itself, in particular appoint its chairperson or co-chairpersons (the "Chair" or "Co-Chairs"), the vice-chairperson (the "Vice-Chair") and the executive director, if any (the "Executive Director");
b. convene and chair General Assemblies and Working Sessions and execute decisions of these Assemblies;
c. recommend the contributions of GMTA Members to the General Assembly;
d. approve the Chair or Co-Chairs' decision to authorize representatives who may bind GMTA and dispense its funds;
e. publish Official GMTA Documents (see the Rules for Policy Development, Article 15);
f. establish and delegate tasks to one or more Committees and oversee the activities of such Committees ;
g. appoint any other body as the GMTA Board may deem appropriate;
h. adopt and modify such rules and by-laws as it may deem necessary or convenient for the proper conduct and management of GMTA;
i. monitor the budget and carry out an appropriate accounting ; j. determine any other business not expressly falling within the competence of another body.  

General Assembly of Full Members
Founding Members and any other formally constituted legal entities, or other forms of organizations or partnerships with legal capacity, with full membership rights and obligations pursuant to Articles 60 to 79 of the Swiss Civil Code, in particular:
a. national medical technology associations which are formally constituted organizations comprised of companies which manufacture or supply medical technology;
b. regional medical technology associations which are formally constituted organizations comprised of national associations and/or companies which manufacture or supply medical technology;
c. associations which are formally constituted organizations comprised of national associations and/or companies from the same national or regional area that are active in a specialist medical technology industry sector (e.g., devices, imaging, diagnostics)  
a. elect GMTA Board members for a term of two years and dismiss GMTA Board members;
b. decide on applications for membership;
c. fix the contributions of GMTA Members upon recommendation of the GMTA Board;
d. approve the GMTA Board's annual report, annual financial statement and annual budget;
e. decide on nonrecurring investments exceeding CHF 1,000 (one thousand Swiss Francs), the purchase and sale of real estate and the taking up of a loan;
f. if applicable, appoint, discharge and revoke an auditor and determine his/her remuneration;
g. if applicable, appoint and revoke the appointment of an external accountant and determine his/her remuneration;
h. terminate the membership of any Member of GMTA;
i. amend the Articles of Association;
j. dissolve or merge GMTA with another entity.

The GMTA has no financial statements. Because the GMTA does not collect dues, it has no formal source of funds. Financial documents/a financial report is thus not available. Instead, eight GMTA members voluntarily provide funds to Sidley Austin, since it acts as the GMTA’s Secretariat in Geneva. Each contributing association, as well as Sidley Austin, is subject to its individual audit.
The GMTA has no assets.

  Activities

The mission of GMTA is to support the objectives of providing safe, effective and innovative medical technology that saves and enhances lives, benefiting people and society. GMTA provides a forum in which Members exchange information and jointly develop and advocate policies that encourage innovation in medical technology to address patients' healthcare needs. GMTA seeks to reflect the medical technology industry's views on a global basis and engage with policy makers at a global level.

Within the framework of its mission and unless the GMTA Board decides otherwise, the objectives and scope of GMTA include in particular:

a. Develop, promote and disseminate information pertaining to medical technology policies and issues on a global basis;
b. coordinate common policy positions for effective representation of the medical technology industry at a global level generally and before the following organisations: the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank (WB), World Intellectual
Strategic Priority 1: One billion more people benefiting from universal health coverage
Strategic Priority 2: One billion more people better protected from health emergencies
Strategic Priority 3: One billion more people enjoying better health and well-being
Strategic Priority 4: More effective and efficient WHO providing better support to countries

Pursuant the WHO Framework of Engagement with Non-State Actors, WHO does not engage with the tobacco industry or non-State actors that work to further the interests of the tobacco industry. WHO also does not engage with the arms industry.

For the purposes of this statement:

  • tobacco industry means any entity involved in the manufacture, sale or distribution of tobacco and related products, and any affiliate of such entity; and
  • arms industry means any entity involved in the manufacture, sale or distribution of arms, and any affiliate of such entity.

This disclosure statement needs to be provided by any nongovernmental organization, private sector entity, philanthropic foundation and academic institution prior to engaging with WHO.

In view of the foregoing, please answer the following questions:

  1. Is your entity, or was your entity over the last four years, part of the tobacco or arms industries (as defined above)?
  1. To the best of your entity’s knowledge, is your entity, or has your entity over the last four years, engaged in activities that are aimed at furthering or supporting the interests of the tobacco industry? This includes, but is not limited to, supply contracts, contract work, services and lobbying.
  1. To the best of your entity’s knowledge, does your entity currently, or did your entity over the last four years, have any other association or relationship with the tobacco industry (as defined above). This includes in particular investment interests (other than general mutual funds or similar arrangements whereby your entity has no control over the selection of the investments), commercial business interests, the provision or receipt of financial and/or other support.
  1. If you have answered yes to any of the above or are unable to answer one or more questions, please provide a general statement of explanation.

Please note that the WHO Secretariat reserves the right to request additional information from your entity in this regard.
By providing this statement, your entity commits to promptly inform WHO of any change to the above information and to complete a new statement that describes the changes.
