ICCBBA is the international standards organization responsible for the management and development of the ISBT 128 Standard for blood and transplant. The ISBT 128 standard has been designed to ensure the highest levels of accuracy, safety, and efficiency for the benefit of donors and patients worldwide. ISBT 128 provides international consistency to support the transfer, traceability and transfusion/transplantation of blood, cells, tissues and organs.

ICCBBA's vision: Global adoption of ISBT 128 for all medical products of human origin (MPHO).

ICCBBA's mission: Enhancing patient safety by promoting and managing the ISBT 128 international information standard for use with medical products of human origin.

ICCBBA's priorities:
-To manage international information standards for transfusion medicine, transplantation, and other applications of medical products of human origin in support of traceability, biovigilance, and patient safety.
-To liaise with health authorities, regulators, scientific and professional societies, user communities, and vendors on standardization in terminology and information technology.
-To provide educational programs to promote the value of, and need for, information standards and policies to support traceability and biovigilance.
-To provide technical consultation regarding the implementation and management of ISBT 128.
-To lead in the continued development of common data structures for information technology, data processing, exchange and transfer, and labeling for medical products of human origin.

  Activities

ICCBBA was established as a self-funded, international, not-for-profit standards organization to:
(a) be organized and operated exclusively for charitable, scientific and educational purposes
(b) support the development, updating, maintenance and promotion of (i) international standards for labeling, data structures and associated code tables for transfusion and transplantation, (ii) related electronic data interchange protocols, and to provide a central focus for information transfer, code assignments and distribution, and technical expertise regarding transfusion and transplantation automation, and (iii) educational materials, programs and policies designed to educate the transfusion and transplantation community particularly, and the public generally, regarding the foregoing purposes and the efforts of ICCBBA in achieving those purposes.
Strategic objective 1: Respond to climate change, an escalating health threat in the 21st century.
Strategic objective 2: Address health determinants and the root causes of ill health in key policies across sectors.
Strategic objective 3: Advance the primary health care approach and essential health system capacities for universal health coverage.
Strategic objective 4: Improve health service coverage and financial protection to address inequity and gender inequalities.
Strategic objective 5: Prevent, mitigate and prepare for risks to health from all hazards.
Strategic objective 6: Rapidly detect and sustain an effective response to all health emergencies.
ICCBBA offers a grant each year called the Enterprise Grant.
Objectives of the Enterprise Grant:

• To build technical capacity in transfusion and/or transplantation activities in terms of safety and efficiency.
• To assist transfusion/transplantation establishments in achieving reliable traceability of all MPHO that they manage.
• To enable ICCBBA to achieve its mission to enhance patient safety through developing and maintaining international information standards for MPHO

  • tobacco industry means any entity involved in the manufacture, sale or distribution of tobacco and related products, and any affiliate of such entity; and
  • arms industry means any entity involved in the manufacture, sale or distribution of arms, and any affiliate of such entity.

This disclosure statement needs to be provided by any nongovernmental organization, private sector entity, philanthropic foundation and academic institution prior to engaging with WHO.

The ISBT 128 Standard is used by healthcare facilities to ensure globally unique identification of MPHO. ICCBBA licenses healthcare facilities to use the ISBT 128 Standard.
The ISBT 128 Standard is used by pharmaceutical companies to ensure the chain of identification of MPHO-based therapies e.g. CAR-T cell therapies. ICCBBA licenses these companies to use the ISBT 128 Standard.
